How it works

On-device intelligence, no cloud required.

Critterboard bundles lightweight, hardware-accelerated vision models directly into the app. Identification runs on your phone's neural engine — never on a remote server, never over a network.

Models are quantized and optimized for mobile inference, delivering identification accuracy comparable to server-side systems at a fraction of the compute cost. No API key. No rate limit. No latency.

🧠
Quantized Vision Models 4-bit quantized models optimized for iOS Neural Engine and Android NNAPI. Runs in under 200 ms per frame on mid-range hardware.
Hardware Acceleration Delegates inference to the on-device NPU or GPU via Core ML on iOS and NNAPI / GPU delegate on Android. CPU fallback guaranteed.
🗺️
Regional Model Packages Models are scoped to your region's insect fauna, keeping file sizes small and accuracy high for the species you'll actually encounter.
📦

One-time model download on first launch ~50–100 MB

The regional AI model package is fetched once on first launch, or pre-downloaded over Wi-Fi before you head out. After that, everything runs fully offline. We recommend completing this step at home before going into the field. Once done, Critterboard works anywhere — forest, meadow, or no-bars wilderness.
